When Is It Time To Repair a Broken AC?

Old or damaged air conditioners cause homeowners to pay extra on their electric bills. Although it may seem expensive to repair an air conditioner that is technically still running, it saves money in the long run. Here are a few signs to consider when deciding whether an AC system can last another season.

Scary Noises

soundsThe air conditioner's loud sounds are a tell-tale sign that something is wrong. Depending on the type of noise and where it's located, some repairs may be necessary sooner rather than later.

Loud banging from behind the walls is one of the most frightening signs that an air conditioning system needs work. The banging may sound like rattling from behind a washing machine. This sound indicates that the compressor system is too old to function properly. Although the entire system does not need to be replaced, one should fix the compressor to prevent detached components from banging against other parts.

A low hum from the air conditioner is usually normal, but if it becomes noticeable while watching TV or having a conversation, this is a sign of relay switch damage. The contract relay switch allows the outdoor unit to connect to the thermostat but won't turn on if the component is broken.

Continuous clicking sounds are quiet but serious. Usually, this has to do with the thermostat. A malfunctioning thermostat means the dial is set to one number while the indoor temperature is much hotter. Many homeowners make the mistake of continuing to turn the thermostat down even though it will only expend more energy.

Is Replacement Required for Faulty Thermostats?

thermostatOne can fix problems with the thermostat without replacing the broken air conditioner. Homeowners can also test the thermostat before calling a technician to ensure this is the problem.

The reading may be inaccurate if a thermostat is placed along the outside wall or in direct sunlight. Thermostats are most effective when away from air vents, hallways, and windows.

Homeowners will need to tape an old mercury thermometer next to the thermostat for an accurate reading. The thermometer should be left on the wall for at least an hour before providing accurate results.

The thermostat monitors the temperature indoors. If the reading is incorrect, it can cause uneven cooling throughout the house. If the thermostat is constantly changed to regulate one room, homeowners should expect to see their power bill rise.

Different Temperatures in Different Rooms

When one room is substantially cooler than another, homeowners can potentially solve this problem on their own. Opening the air vents will circulate cool air trapped in the ducts if the air vents are closed or blocked. Homeowners can also remedy this issue by cleaning their air filters every month.

Professionals must handle other issues. Poorly installed ductwork requires specific knowledge and tools to handle these repairs. If the ductwork is unbalanced throughout the house, one should adjust the dampers from the inside. This is a potentially dangerous and expensive job without licensed and insured contractors.

Uneven temperatures throughout the house are likely due to a thermostat problem. Since this is often called the "brain" of the entire air conditioner, it's important to call a technician as soon as possible.
