How to Know When to Replace the Thermostat

Thermostats are the control centers of HVAC equipment. When they malfunction, they can cause a host of issues, including faster wear and tear on heating and cooling equipment and an uncomfortable home with high energy bills.

The good news is thermostats are cheaper to replace than heating and cooling systems. Here are some signs that the thermostat needs to be replaced.

Energy Bills Are Too High

billsHeating and cooling a home are a significant part of monthly utility bills. Often, a faulty or outdated thermostat in need of replacement contributes greatly to excessive runtime, raising heating and cooling costs, making it a sign the thermostat may need to be replaced.

If energy bills are too high and homeowners don’t want to choose between lower costs and comfort, smart thermostats are great. They use the latest technology to create a heating or cooling schedule for the family, such as when no one is around, or everyone is asleep, while keeping the temperature perfect when people are home.

If energy bills have gotten too high, replacing the thermostat with a smart thermostat is a great option for reducing costs.

Incorrect Temperature Readings

thermostatThe thermostat must read the temperature correctly to control the temperature inside the home accurately. If the temperature is even a few degrees out of calibration, the home will feel too warm or cold, and the owner will compensate by spending more to heat or cool it.

To test the thermostat’s accuracy, use a separate thermometer and verify that the reading is within two degrees. If the difference is greater, a new thermostat is likely needed. In this scenario, replacing the thermostat will make the home feel comfortable again and will result in lower bills.

Short Cycling System

HVAC equipment is powerful and expensive. It has to last for a long time so that homeowners can justify its cost. When the thermostat malfunctions, it can cause the system to run for cycles that are too short. This greatly increases the wear and tear on the system by requiring it to run through damaging startup procedures repeatedly.

If the system has to run more than three or four times an hour and isn’t staying on for at least 15-20 minutes, the thermostat is likely to blame. Replacing the thermostat can save money in the long run by preventing the need for repairs and premature replacement.
