What Is the Best Water Filtration Option for a Modern Home?

Water is such an essential part of modern life. It’s something that many people are fortunate enough to take for granted. It’s vital for so many activities of everyday life. It’s also vital for proper hygiene and health. Unfortunately, water is not as clean as many homeowners would like it to be. Whether it be chlorine, lead, pesticides, bacteria, or other pollutants, water can quickly get dirty.

This is why filtration options are important to consider. Filtering water is essential for peace of mind and the best health possible.

Faucet Filtersfaucet

Most people are familiar with faucet filters. These are called point of use filters because they filter water at the faucet where it’s being used. These attach to the faucet so that water flows through the filter when the faucet is turned on. Faucet filters are typically low-cost and easy to install. However, they do not fit on all faucets. They’re typically designed for kitchen faucets.

The big downside to a faucet filter is that it only filters the water coming out of that faucet. This means that to drink or use clean water, household members must use that specific sink. Some models slow down the flow of water, which many homeowners don’t like. And, although they’ve come a long way, the size of a faucet filter may be too large for some peoples’ liking.

Undersink Filtersfilter

Undersink filters are exactly what they sound like. They’re installed under the sink— usually the kitchen sink. They tap into the pipes that transport water to the sink, filtering the water before getting to the faucet. Since these kinds of filters can be a little larger than faucet filters, they tend to be better at removing more contaminants from the water. They’re also out of sight and out of mind, which is nice for many homeowners. However, these filters only take care of the water for that particular faucet.

The biggest hurdle to installing an undersink filter is the plumbing modifications required. However, those with a basic understanding of plumbing can generally install one of these filters with ease. If not, it’s a quick job for a professional plumber.

Whole-Home Filtration

The last filtration option is whole-home filtration. This is ideal for those who want their water clean and healthy. These systems require professional installation and are larger than the other options on this list. But, they’re also installed out of the way, meaning that space isn’t usually a concern.

Whole-home filters have a higher up-front cost than undersink or faucet filters, which is to be expected. The fact that household members can brush their teeth, drink, and bathe in clean water wherever they are in the house is worth it for some. Those that want clean water all over their home should invest in a whole-home filter. Those who don’t mind bathing or brushing with potentially polluted water should consider an undersink or faucet filter.
